We were introduced to Corfu, Greece two years ago as our way-station between America and Sarande, Albania. There are no direct flights into Sarande. So to travel there, you must either land in Tirana, and take an eight-hour bus trip south. Or fly to Corfu, and take a 30-minute ferry.
We quickly fell in love with this city, and their patron, St. Spyridon. He is honored four times every year on the island. One of those events is the first Sunday of November. We have attended that festival twice; first in 2022, and again this year.
We think you’ll love this video we made about St. Spyridon and Corfu. It includes footage from the parade in November. And tells the story of his life, and how his relics journeyed from the island of Cyprus to Corfu, and the miracles that accompanied them.
Our love for the island, and St. Spyridon has grown since returning to the Ionaian in 2024. We have lived in Sarande a full month now. We hopped on the ferry yesterday so we could celebrate the feast day of St. Spyridon, December 12th.
The island is beautifully lit up with Christmas!
A common practice in Orthodoxy is to light candles in the church to accompany our prayers.
In every city we live, Deana and I walk each day to the nearest church and light candles for the people and needs in our life.
One of those candles is always lit for you, our family, friends and readers.
We hope you are all having a blessed nativity season as we look forward to the birth of Christ our savior.
I was thinking of you today at Divine Liturgy! So glad you could go back to celebrate him in that church again!
